BOK started as the Exchange National Bank in Tulsa. It was formed in 1910. The bank was started with a number of high-priority investors, including Harry Sinclair who would later become the president of the bank.
The bank made it through the great depression, thanks to a number of oil tycoons who gave the bank more than $18 million to keep it afloat during the tough times. Thanks to these investments, the bank grew during the oil boom of the 1930s into one of the largest banks in the region. It was during this time that the bank was reorganized and renamed as the National Bank of Tulsa. In 1991, they reverted back to the name Bank of Oklahoma.
The bank continues to expand at a rapid rate, and made it safely through the recent economic crisis that shut down so many different banks in the area. In 2005, BOK Financial purchased the naming rights for the BOK Center for a price that was reportedly higher than $10 million USD.
